Grandma and Grandpa and a photo shoot

We had another great week.  My parents came to visit and they were huge lifesavers.  Zeke loved having them here and so did I.  I got lots of naps, freezer meals, and ice cream, Zeke got lots of fun times and Trustin got two drawers full of Sun Chips and Doritos (he is a little addicted to chips) and chocolate milk. Plus we loved the company.  There is nothing quite like having mom around.
Grandma and my sweet little Ashlynn.

The Grandpa Pool Monster

We had to put Ashlynn in a swimsuit too, just for fun.  She was adorable, although I think whoever designed this swimsuit had never seen a baby before.  It was the perfect length and about 3 times too wide.
Precious

Zeke really really really liked Grandma's blue socks. (He also likes his current bedroom: the closet.  Yes, he really does love it.  It was his request.)

As with Zeke, I had to have fun pretending to be a photographer.  Here are a couple of the best ones I took.  My skills are lacking, but she is BEAUTIFUL.

Zeke loves his little sister and he is extremely good at sharing.

Zeke had to make sure Ashylnn didn't forget her shaving cream.

Zeke loves to give Ashlynn loves.  When he woke up from his nap yesterday he got out a couple toys and was about to start playing when he caught sight of Ashlynn on the couch. He immediately dropped the toys and bolted over to her and gave her a HUGE hug.  It takes quite a bit of diligence to make sure his big hugs don't crush her with love.  I am loving how much he loves her though.  He always goes to her when she starts whimpering or crying so he can sing her a happy song or give her a love. He is the cutest big brother.

Ashlynn

Here is our newest little one updated in pictures.  She is such a perfect little girl and we are so blessed to have her.  She is a really content little gal and sleeps better than a newborn. I truly believe Heavenly Father has divinely intervened a bit in that area knowing that a McKelle on no sleep couldn't quite handle the other stresses in our life right now.  Most nights I actually end up waking her up because I'm nervous she'll starve.  She had one night of waking up for the day at 1 AM but every night since has been great.  When she is awake she loves to just look around and often chew on her hands.  I have given her a self diagnosis of an allergy to breastmilk...at least it always results in the symptom of severe drowsiness from which there is almost no waking.  It is such a battle to get her to drink more than 3 swallows before she is out.

 Sweet little newborn

When Zeke got to the hospital the morning after Ashlynn was born he was instantly ready for his role as the big brother.  We wondered if he has understood what was coming in these last several months but he made it instantly clear that he wasn't the least bit confused.  He walked into the room and we showed him Ashlynn and asked him if he knew who this baby was.  He said (with a voice that said it was so obvious) "Baby Ashes" and then pointed at me and said "out Mommy's tummy" and then pointed up (Heaven).  He quickly climbed up onto my hospital bed and said "Carry Ashes and tried to grab her out of my arms and hold her.  It was so sweet how much he already loved her.

My favorite thing about watching the two of them interact this last week is Zeke's singing.  Zeke will occassionally sing songs, but never if you ask him to.  That is until Ashlynn was born.  Now anytime we say "Zeke will you sing Ashlynn a wake up song?" he starts singing.  It is adorable.  He also loves to pretend to eat her toes, nose, hair, etc.  (this game has lately been a favorite with Mom and Dad and he quickly introduce Ashlynn to the fun).  I am trying to post videos of both of these on facebook and I personally recommend watching them if you like cuteness.

 Our happy little family
 Daddy's girl
Whoa she looks tiny in there
This is my good friend Kendra.  She is amazing and a lifesaver!  She and her husband watched Zeke while we were at the hospital, let us live in her house when disaster struck, and has helped out so much with Zeke and Ashlynn.  She also bought me my favorite ice cream.  Double brownie points.

It is still hard to say for sure who Ashlynn looks like.  We think she looks a lot like Zeke did as a newborn and there are a few features we can pinpoint.  Her hands definately came from my Mom.  Long long long fingers and nail beds (although you can't really even tell from this picture).  So beautiful.

Her tiny head can't really keep on any of the headbands we had access too this week.
 Cutie!

 Kisses
I already can't get enough of her!  Especially when her eyes are open!

Ashlynn's birth story

This post is pretty much the complete birth story, to help me remember it all. As such it is really long and perhaps a bit over detailed for a casual blog follower. Just a warning.

At my doctor’s appointment on Monday morning (the 11th) they told me that I was almost dilated to a three and then on Tuesday I lost my mucus plug, so I was starting to get hopeful that Ashlynn would be here this week. We spent most of Wednesday just like a normal day. Zeke and I walked to the park in the morning and I spent about an hour running around the baseball diamond chasing an imaginary baseball (we forgot to bring our real baseball and ball but that didn’t stop Zeke; he was thrilled to jump up and swing his arms and congratulate himself “nice catch!” and then throw it to me. After catching it we had to “run base”). Then there was a grocery trip, lunch, Zeke took a nap and I read a book. All without any discomfort or pain.

Finally at 4:00 I finally started to feel contractions that had any sort of resemblance to pain. I sent Trustin a text that said “some of these puppies are starting hurt, wahoo!” and he texted back “Wahooo!” Not wanting him to get overly excited I told him that my pain wasn’t enough for a wahoo with three o’s. But naturally the moment I sent that they started to get a bit more wahooo worthy. This was about 4:20ish. When Zeke woke up I turned on a movie for us to watch so that I could sit on the love sac and begin my official “relaxing” that I’d been preparing for lately. I called my mom to tell her that I thought I might have a baby within the next day and my dad asked how far apart my contractions were. I had no clue because I never had my timer ready to go before a contraction started and Trustin wasn’t home from work yet to help. (Due to this my dad told my mom he was worried I would have a home birth because I had no idea if I was in labor…I think he should have given me that warning too because he was far too close to being right!) I also called my friend Kendra who had agreed to watch Zeke when we went to the hospital. She said that she would already be over in our side of town around 7 or 7:30 and I told her that that should be a good time to come pick Zeke up.

I never made it back downstairs to watch the movie with Zeke because contractions kept starting before I got up and went downstairs. Rather I just lay on the bed or the floor and tried to relax. Relaxing was not easy but I realized that the contractions really were far less painful when I managed to make myself fully relax. So I tried my best, and was sometimes successful. When Trustin got home he was able to help me relax better than I’d been managing on my own. He was such a lifesaver talking me through relaxing, telling me that I could do it (that was the thing I most needed to hear) and massaging my lower back. I never could have done it without him! We still never got around to a really accurate timing of my contractions because I needed Trustin’s focus on helping me relax and then between contractions I sent him to load up our hospital stuff and pack Zeke’s bag (a detail I never thought about until I was in labor, oops).

There were many factors contributing to our confusion with labor. And yes, we were completely naïve. Here I was in labor and we had to look up at what point we should go to the hospital. The site we found said “contractions should be 2-5 minutes apart for several hours” and then we should call my doctor. Plus I had talked to many friends who said they had tried to bear with labor pains for as long as they could before going to the hospital and when they got to the hospital they were only a 3 or 4 and other friends that were in labor for 18 hours or even more. Plus in all of the things we’d been reading for labor prep there were three stages and the middle phase was many hours long. I had great plans for the movies I would watch, the relaxing(though painful) bath I would take, and I had made a long list of memories and places for Trustin to talk me through visualizing during the many hours of labor. So in my mind, labor was something that lasts a long time. Finally, I had heard that the hospital I was going to was notoriously busy and often time laboring mothers were left in triage for hours (a miserable looking place where up to 4 ladies could be stuck at one time…no thank you please). So even before labor began I was hoping to do as much of my enduring at home as possible.

Yet things were getting pretty much excruciating and it felt like there was hardly any time between contractions. There should have been a bell going off in my head at this point…but there wasn’t. In my head I was probably dilating at about a 4 or 5 and the fact that everything was so painful and felt so close together was simply my low pain tolerance talking. I was frustrated with myself for being such a wimp. Luckily Trustin was there to help me though it all. And Zeke was such a cute helper too. I was lying on the love sac and crying and Trustin told Zeke that Mommy had an owie. Zeke said “Mommy boo boo?” and gave me kisses. Then I discovered that it was helpful for me to crawl around on my hands and knees during contractions and Zeke thought it was great fun to crawl around too. Finally at around 6:40ish I started to think that I had better go to the hospital. I asked Trustin to call Kendra and ask her to come now rather than the original time we’d agreed to. Then I went in to the restroom. While I was sitting there my water broke. I thought “oh that’s really convenient, now we won’t have to worry about sending Trustin home from the hospital clean up wet carpet…there is irony in that, just wait.

Once my water broke, ouch! I called out for Trustin and by the time he got downstairs, still on the phone, I was lying on the bathroom floor crying, writhing, and beginning to yell a bit more than I care to admit. In all of our labor practicing (I used to relax with my hands or feet in buckets of ice water so that I was learning to ignore the pain) I envisioned myself in labor with intense pain but yet with me calmly relaxing through it with our relaxation techniques. I guess I underestimated the intensity of contractions. I wanted to be nice but I yelled “hang up the phone” which he did (nevermind that I told him to make that phonecall. We climbed in the car and started driving to the store where my friend’s husband works. I hadn’t known that I was a screamer, but I definitely had some volume on that ride. Not quite so dramatic as the ladies in movies (at least Trustin says I wasn’t so bad). I was in such a delimma, urging Trustin to drive as fast as he could and also hating the fast turns and bumbs etc. I was trying desperately to be nice to Trustin because he was my hero through everything so I was politely screaming “please drive smoother, please!” and “slow, slow, slow, please slow!!!” We got to the store and Trustin unbuckled Zeke’s carseat from the car (with Zeke still buckled to his seat) and ran the whole thing inside the store and left him just inside the door. He flew back to the car and we raced to the hospital. He only ran 1 red light.

We got to the hospital at 7:00 and Trustin put me in a wheelchair and rushed me upstairs. One nurse at the desk took one look at me and said “I’m just going to take her to a room.” Victory, I successfully evade triage; the secret : look like you are about to die of pain. The nurse said something about an epidural and I was so proud of myself that I loudly said “NO!” I don’t know how I managed that. They got me to the room and the nurse asked me to put on the gown. Before I could another contraction began and I dropped and started crawling on the floor and then lay down on my side on the hard wood floor. I was just praying that I was pretty dilated because I needed some justification for being quite so dramatic. When the contraction eased the nurse urged me to quickly put on the gown and hop on the bed so they could check me. She took one look at me and said “oh, there’s a baby right there.” Naturally my doctor hadn’t had time to get to the hospital and there was literally no time to wait. I didn’t care a bit. I thought “You nurses look competent, let’s just take care of this.” But there was another doctor who was there, Dr. Skinner and he came in in the nic of time to deliver my baby. The nurses kept urgin me to hold my breath and push and I kept remembering the things I’d read about this part of childbirth but it was difficult to get myself to do it. Trustin said “you are about to meet our baby” and that helped. All of this agony, and fear and pain was about to bring forth my little angel. I was so grateful that I was able to have the experience of pushing her out and even all of the misery of labor feels beautiful in my memory. I would go through that and so much more for my little Ashlynn or for my Zeke. I felt so blessed that my body was able to be the means of bringing this miracle into the world.

Ashlynn Kaydean Anderson was born at 7:13 on July 13th. She weighed 6 lbs 12 oz, was 19 ½ inches long and completely beautiful. They laid her down on my tummy right away and I fell in love. She was so tiny and precious and everything about her testified that she was sent straight from my Father in heaven. I love my little lady.

Not to dampen the mood but…

okay, that is a hokey pun, but I couldn’t resist. The story doesn’t end here. Ashlynn was about 10 minutes away from being born in the car, but that wasn’t enough excitement for us. At about 11:30 that night Trustin bolted up from frantically from his couch and gasped that he had to go home. He was apologizing profusely as he quickly explained and bolted out the door. So back up several hours to a wife in horrific pain crying on the lovesac: Trustin decided to start the bath water for me to lay in to see if that would ease some of the pain. As he went upstairs to turn on the tub I went to the restroom downstairs where moments later my water broke. In that frantic moment Trustin rushed down to my aid and then we were rushing to the hospital…meanwhile the bathtub was still rushing too.

So Trustin gets home at about midnight to see water pouring out of the garage. Part of the ceiling there had completely collapsed and upstairs the entire hallway, three bedrooms and the bathroom were soaked. Understatement. As of today the carpet has all been ripped up, there are about a million heavy duty fans going, the ceiling and walls of the garage, hall, and laundry room are being torn apart and the bottom foot of the walls upstairs as well. We thought Ashlynn needed to come home to new paint and carpet.

Our suite at the Marriot is not bad.  I'm not saying I'd like to build a summer home here but the mini fridge is actually quite lovely.

This has been one crazy week!

also, Trustin has about a million pictures of our house and our beautiful daughter posted on facebook.

Boom Boom

In the interest of time and the fact that I keep intending to devote this week's free time to napping so I will be incredibly well rested when Ashlynn arrives (haha, good luck with that McKelle, so far less sleep at night and not a single nap...) I just chose two pictures to represent what might otherwise be two photo stuffed posts.

This week Zeke got to enjoy "big booms" twice.  First we had a crazy crazy thunderstorm.  It was pouring rain so hard that water on our street was flowing in two directions: up the street in the middle from the wind and down the street in the gutters.  Our yard became (and still is) a giant mud bog.  Zeke loved it though.  We watched for almost two hours and the next day Zeke was quite frustrated with me because I wouldn't turn on the rain.
The seceond set of booms was naturally fireworks.  We just watched a few at a barbeque with our old ward.  Zeke was fine at first but once he'd had his fill he refused to stay outside.  The next day however he said "vroom, red car" and when I asked him where he wanted to go he said "fireworks."

My Baby Boy is Two!

This post is going to be a bit out of order, since I'm not used to the way blogger uploads pictures now.  And we have had lots of things happen lately that deserve a post, but I thought this was the first priority because::

My Zekester is 2!  Everyday I love that kiddo more and more and I just can't get enough of him.  He is such a crack up and constantly has us laughing.  I especially love that he has learned how to tease.  The other day he was sitting on my chair in the kitchen and asked "My chair?" (is this my chair?).  I said "nope, Mommy's chair" and tickled him.  Then he got his mischievous grin on (shoulders up, chin tucked, sneaky grin as he slowly raises his face to begin his mischief) and declared "Zeke's chair!!"  I kept insisting (with tickles for emphasis) that it was not Zeke's chair, but Mommy's and so he kept declaring that it was his.  He knew that it was mine and I loved how he enjoyed pretending to not know so that I would react.  He is such a ham!

One of his favorite words this week is "oh."  He says this to just about every statement we say to him like they are all very interesting and he has come to a clear understanding of something.  And he has also taken to saying "whoa" and "wow" quite a bit too.

Zeke is really cute with his toys.  He has about seven that he insists on sleeping with every night (and most of them aren't very cuddly).  He also tends to remember where everything came from.  For example he has a cat that Santa gave him at the bank last year and he always holds it up and says "tiny ho ho" and every time he holds up his tigger cup that Jantzen and Stephanie gave him recently he says "Tanks Jantzdrink"(thanks Jantzen).

He is very appreciative of the little things.  He directs his bedtime prayers now and he could go on and on and on for the things he is thankful for.  When we had family here a while back all the kids had matching blue shirts and now it is not uncommon for Zeke to pray for "Lissy blue shirt, Zinc Zinc blue shirt, Juya blue shirt, Zac blue shirt, etc, etc" and he prays for just about everything he can see.  It is fun to spy on him as he looks around the room to find things to pray for.

He loves to give "crash hugs" which means he charges across the room with his arms held out behind him until he crashes into Trustin or I and we are supposed to fall backwards and "crash."

This lovely position is what is know around here as "the dead cockroach."  In honor of Trustin's brother and his family coming to visit last week from Texas, where the roaches are even more impressive than our Vegas variety, Trustin decided it was necessary to teach Zeke this useful pose.  I love my husband! And may I say, my son is definitely the cutest dead cockroach ever (not that the competition is very fierce aside from his handsome daddy, the rest of the competitors are all quite unwelcome in our home).

Yesterday I was cleaning up in the kitchen and I hear a little call of "help peaze, Mommy, help peaze."  Zeke had crawled under this chair and gotten stuck.

So on to the birthday festivities:
We decided to celebrate with just us this year since Zeke got a big party last year and we didn't know if I'd be close to childbirth (guess what, I'm currently betting she won't be here until the 20th. She seems in no hurry to move things along thus far at least). But we did want it to be a special day for Zeke so we devoted the entirety of Saturday to complete Zeke entertainment.  This is where the pictures get all out of order.

One gift that we knew was a must for Zeke's birthday was a special chair.  He found his old bouncer and used it for a long time as his reading and movie watching chair.  In hopes that he would stop thinking of it as his chair I hid it in the closet for several months.  When he found it I told him it was for baby Ashlynn he said "Zeke baby" and climbed on.  He loved that chair, so to avoid sadness when the baby who gets the chair is not Zeke but Ashlynn we needed an adequate replacement.  A Mater and Lightning McQueen chair was hit.  He immediately sat on his chair with his new "Keen," "tiny Mater" and "big Mater" and requested that we watch Mater.  We obliged and let him watch a movie and eat a delicious dinner of MacCheese.

In the earlier part of the day we went to a splash park with one of Zeke's buddies.  Zeke loves splash parks and friends, so it was a great few hours.

He played with the trucks his Uncle Jantzen and family gave him for a long time before he decided to open any more presents.  I think he would have been thrilled even if we'd stopped right then (and they were the first ones we opened).

And you thought the cake I made for Trustin was a bit of a flop...So this picture doesn't look nearly terrible enough...It was worse in person. Remember how I contemplated making a fondant cake?  Good thing I didn't.  I probably ought to master a regular cake first.  This one was intended to be one giant balloon but instead my cake fell apart into about 13 pieces, (three of which were sort of big enough to frost) and my frosting skills needed some major work.  Luckily Zeke was still pleased.  In the week before his party we kept asking him what he wanted and he said "blue cake" and when we asked him what kind of presents he said "pink."  Hmm.  We were short on the pink present ideas (or perhaps we wanted to be short on them) so we compromised with a pink cake with blue frosting.

Zeke and his daddy by the time Zeke is cold and ready for a nap.
I love the intensity and deliberateness of the way little kids run

So the biggest surprise of the day happened right after breakfast.  Balloons!  About a month or two ago Wendy's gave Zeke two balloons and he prayed for those balloons every night (including for weeks after they had deflated).  He loves balloons.  So to surprise him we spent lots of time and oxygen blowing up about 60 balloons and hid them upstairs. In the morning we had Zeke stand up below the banister and then I started throwing down balloons as fast as I could. I had sort of envisioned those game shows where a giant net releases millions of balloons all at once and it is incredibly dramatic and WOW, but 60 balloons is not quite millions and my speed to toss balloons was likewise not quite as dramatic.  But since Zeke doesn't watch gameshows, he had no clue what he was missing and he was in heaven!  We spent over an hour just kicking and throwing and running around through balloons that morning, and then resumed again when we got back from the splash park.  He loved them so much he actually said "no" to both cake and presents!  But we eventually convinced him that those would be fun too.

Happy Birthday my handsome silly boy! I love you!!
